Right in the centre of the capital<\/strong> of Spain, and next to\u00a0Madrid de los Austrias<\/strong>, we come upon Opera<\/strong>, one of our favourite places in the city. Although, officially, the name of this area is called Palacio<\/strong>, most of the “Madrile\u00f1os” call it Opera. This is due to the importance of the Teatro Real<\/strong>. It is an apt starting point for a stroll through old Madrid. The underground station<\/strong> there, has also been given the name of Opera. Today, we invite you to accompany us along its streets, as well as its unique spots and its history.<\/p>\n

An infalible plan<\/strong><\/p>\n

When you reach Plaza de Isabel II<\/strong>, you will be stunned by the beauty of the Teatro Real<\/strong>, whose opening ceremony took place in 1850. The grand buildings<\/strong>, the narrow streets<\/strong> and the crowded caf\u00e8s which have sprouted in the vecinity, are all an awesome sight. Furthermore, these old streets are full of different kinds of shops<\/strong>, which sell from antique books and second-hand records, to ornaments of all kinds.<\/p>\n

The area leading off to the Plaza de Oriente<\/strong>, will again dazzle us by the impressive baroque arquitecture of\u00a0 the Palacio Real<\/strong>, built by Felipe V in 1734. To walk around the beautiful Sabatini Gardens<\/strong> ( designed in the 30\u00b4s) and to breathe fresh air and have a rest in this neoclassical spot<\/strong>, is a real treat !!!<\/p>\n

We can end the day by having a beer and a “tapa”<\/strong> in one of the many famous bars<\/strong>, some of which are over a century old. That\u00b4s how our walk around Opera would be. It is one of our special ways<\/strong> to spend a great day in Madrid.<\/p>\n

Visiting an underground museum<\/strong><\/p>\n

Did you know that Opera underground station<\/strong> is the only one in Madrid that has a museum inside<\/strong>? This museum is dedicated to the fountain of Ca\u00f1os del Peral<\/strong>, probably one of the most antique in Madrid<\/strong>. Its origin could stem from the Arab Baths<\/strong>. This fountain was discovered during the excavation of the underground. The museum, apart from the fountain, exhibits archaeological items of the XVI and XVII century<\/strong> which were found in the area. One of these items is the Amaniel Aqueduct<\/strong> which transported water from the square to the Royal Palace.<\/p>\n
