From the very beginning the performances were related to <strong>Spanish operatic singing<\/strong>. This theatre is one of the most important in Spain and it claims the Spanish <strong>heritage of zarzuela<\/strong>, opera, dancing, concerts and recitals. All of this has taken place in this theatre which has become <strong>essential in the conservation and diffusion of the Spanish lyrical heritage<\/strong>. In our article called <strong>&#8220;Places with a lot of History&#8221; <\/strong>in Madrid, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/teatro-real-part-history-madrid\/?lang=en\">we talked about Teatro Real<\/a>. It grew and it expanded and as a result, <strong>places of leisure and culture<\/strong> increased in number as the people of Madrid became keener and keener on enjoying themselves to the full.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/02-zarzuela2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1772\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/02-zarzuela2.jpg\" alt=\"Teatro de la Zarzuela\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/02-zarzuela2.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/02-zarzuela2-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At that time, <strong>Spanish operatic singing<\/strong> was very popular and very much in demand. Therefore, real-estate developers decided to build <strong>Teatro de la Zarzuela<\/strong> where these performances took place. The building project was <strong>modern and centrally located<\/strong>, as it was next to Calle Alcal\u00e1. It was inaugurated on 10th October 1856 which was the birthday date of queen Isabel II. The building consisted of <strong>a great horseshoe shaped hall<\/strong> and three levels of boxes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/03-zarzuela1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1774\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/03-zarzuela1.jpg\" alt=\"Teatro de la Zarzuela\" width=\"650\" height=\"487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/03-zarzuela1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/03-zarzuela1-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/03-zarzuela1-175x131.jpg 175w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>1909: A FIRE DESTROYS THE THEATRE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The premiere of countless musicians, singers and authors took place in <strong>Teatro de la Zarzuela<\/strong>. Variety Shows were also very popular at that time, but operatic singing was even more successful.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/04-zarzuela1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1776\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/04-zarzuela1.jpg\" alt=\"Teatro de la Zarzuela\" width=\"650\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/04-zarzuela1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/04-zarzuela1-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On 9th November 1909, <strong>a terrible fire<\/strong> reduced most of the theatre to ashes. It had to be reconstructed by <strong>the architect Ces\u00e1reo Iradier<\/strong>. It was not opened to the public till 1913. Iradier conserved its original structure with the horseshoe shaped hall and with the three different levels of boxes. However, <strong>he used more metal<\/strong> so as to make the building more solid and resistant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/05-zarzuela1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1778\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/05-zarzuela1.jpg\" alt=\"Teatro de la Zarzuela\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/05-zarzuela1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/05-zarzuela1-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the Spanish Civil War the activity of Teatro de la Zarzuela decreased and thus, its ownership changed. The Ministry of Culture did not purchase it till 1984. From then on, <strong>new kinds of performances<\/strong> took place such as dancing and flamenco.
