We also think that <strong>Puerta del Sol<\/strong> is the most central area not only of Madrid but also of Spain. But has it always been thus? Has this square been so important throughout the decades? What was its origin? Today, we will take a walk into the past and learn more about the most famous square in Spain: Puerta del Sol. At that time Madrid was surrounded by a fence so as to separate the outskirts and the suburbs from the centre of the city. <strong>One of the entrances of the fence<\/strong> was in Puerta del Sol. Nobody knows for sure the source of the name. However, most historians coincide with the fact that the name may be because of <strong>a picture of the sun<\/strong> in the entrance of the fence. This picture indicated the orientation of the sun in that specific place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/02-sol1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1911\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/02-sol1.jpg\" alt=\"Puerta del Sol\" width=\"650\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/02-sol1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/02-sol1-300x216.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>In<\/strong> <strong>1570<\/strong>, Puerta del Sol was <strong>mentioned for the first time<\/strong>. The main building of the square was built by king Carlos III and it became the <strong>General Post Office<\/strong>. Nowadays, this same building is the central office of the Madrid autonomous community. From the XVII century onwards, Puerta del Sol functioned as <strong>a meeting point<\/strong> for the people of Madrid. In 1847, some buildings were pulled down and hence the square changed to its current appearance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/03-sol1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1913\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/03-sol1.jpg\" alt=\"Puerta del Sol\" width=\"650\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/03-sol1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/03-sol1-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/03-sol1-175x131.jpg 175w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>A CENTRAL POINT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 1950<\/strong>, the Sol district is famed for its <strong>Kil\u00f3metro Cero<\/strong>, from which <strong>all distances in Spain are mapped<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/04-sol1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1915\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/04-sol1.jpg\" alt=\"Puerta del Sol\" width=\"650\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/04-sol1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/04-sol1-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1962, Televisi\u00f3n Espa\u00f1ola broadcasts, for the first time, <strong>the celebration of New Year\u00b4s Eve<\/strong> where we listen to the last twelve chimes of the year. It has become <strong>a tradition<\/strong> since then. At that time some gardens and fountains were added, even though trams and cars also moved along the square which left little space for pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/05-sol1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1917\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/05-sol1.jpg\" alt=\"Puerta del Sol\" width=\"650\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/05-sol1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/05-sol1-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/05-sol1-633x500.jpg 633w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1986, the area for <strong>passers-by was enlarged<\/strong> and vehicles were restricted. Unfortunately it no longer exists. However, its flight of stairs called <strong>Gradas de San Felipe<\/strong>, resulted in a popular meeting place where <strong>the citizens exchanged news and gossip<\/strong>.
