It has been the <strong>skyline of Madrid<\/strong> since it was built <strong>in the 1920\u00b4s<\/strong> and it was <strong>one of the first skyscrapers<\/strong> constructed in Europe. During three decades it was the <strong>tallest building in Madrid<\/strong> until Edificio Espa\u00f1a was built which was superior in height. When Edificio Telef\u00f3nica was built, it gave Madrid <strong>an important modern and technological boos<\/strong>t. Nowadays, we cannot imagine the centre of Madrid without its outline or without <strong>the red lights of its clock<\/strong> at night. Today, we are going to write about <strong>Edificio Telef\u00f3nic<\/strong>a. In the section of <strong>Places with History<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/tetaro-de-la-zarzuela\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">we have already spoken about Teatro de la Zarzuela<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/01-tfnk2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2136\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/01-tfnk2.jpg\" alt=\"Edificio Telef\u00f3nica\" width=\"650\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/01-tfnk2.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/01-tfnk2-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE AUTOMATIC TELEPHONY SYSTEM APPEARS ON THE SCENE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The architect <strong>Luis Ignacio de C\u00e1rdenas<\/strong>, finished the construction of Edificio Telef\u00f3nica ( the head office of Compa\u00f1\u00eda Telef\u00f3nica de Espa\u00f1a ), <strong>at the end of 1929<\/strong>, after three years of hard work. In 1928, <strong>King Alfonso XIII<\/strong> made the <strong>first telephone call to North America<\/strong> and spoke to the President. In 1930, Madrid had <strong>the most emblematic and avant-garde building<\/strong> in Spain. It was 90 metres high and it had 1.800 employees, many of whom were women who worked as <strong>telephone operators<\/strong>. This fact was unusual at the time, because until then, few women had been integrated in the labour market. When Edificio Telef\u00f3nica was finished, the <strong>automatic telephony system<\/strong> took effect and this enabled any subscriber to communicate with another.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/02-tfnk1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2138\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/02-tfnk1.jpg\" alt=\"Edificio Telef\u00f3nica\" width=\"650\" height=\"487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/02-tfnk1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/02-tfnk1-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/02-tfnk1-175x131.jpg 175w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>LOOKING TO THE FUTURE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We must highlight the <strong>neo-baroque fa\u00e7ade<\/strong> of Edificio Telef\u00f3nica. However, its height and its size prevents you from contemplating it in a comfortable way. This is due to the fact that in Gran V\u00eda Avenue you cannot move away in order to achieve a complete perspective. The plot of land upon which it is built is 2.280 m2. The building itself has <strong>a ground floor, two basements and it is thirteen storeys high<\/strong>. There is a half-kilometre <strong>gallery in the underground<\/strong> which goes to <strong>Puerta del Sol<\/strong> and communicates with Edificio de la Gobernaci\u00f3n.
