Some decades ago, Atocha<\/strong> became a point of reference in Madrid<\/strong>. This was due not only to its roundabout<\/strong> but also to its railway station<\/strong>. At present, both places are always busy and crowded. Throughout the years, this area has undergone countless remodellings<\/strong> until it has become what it is nowadays. In the blog of Estate One<\/strong> we think it is worthwhile to take A Walk into the Past<\/strong> in order to see how this area has developed. Currently, it is a key site<\/strong> for everybody who comes to Madrid. In the blog of Estate One some weeks ago we have seen what Puerta del Sol was like<\/a>; today we are going to talk about Atocha<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

HOW A SMALL STATION BECAME A LARGE RAILWAY STATION<\/strong><\/p>\n

When we talk about Atocha<\/strong>, what always comes to mind is the railway station<\/strong>. However, there is also a roundabout<\/strong> and a street<\/strong> with the same name.<\/p>\n

\"Atocha\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Atocha Railway Station<\/strong> is one of the most important in Madrid. It was inaugurated in 1851<\/strong>, and it was just a simple building which was named Embarcadero de Atocha<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

The train ride had only one return journey which was Madrid-Aranjuez. Nevertheless, only the Royal family<\/strong> could use it. Some years later, the size of the station was extended<\/strong>, due to the fact that travelling by train became more and more popular. Important building work took place even though the 1864<\/strong> fire damaged much of its framework. Finally, in 1892<\/strong> it was finished and inaugurated with the name Estaci\u00f3n del Mediod\u00ed<\/strong><\/em>a<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A FAST GROWING RAILWAY STATION<\/strong><\/p>\n

Madrid is a lively and dynamic city which grows day by day<\/strong>. Therefore, Estaci\u00f3n del Mediod\u00eda<\/em> needed constant remodelling<\/strong> in order to adapt to new times<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Atocha\"<\/a><\/p>\n

As the years went by, it changed its name to Estaci\u00f3n de Atocha<\/strong>. At the beginning of the 1920\u00b4s the station was connected to the underground Line 1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Atocha\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In the 50\u00b4s it was electrified<\/strong> and in the 60\u00b4s a complicated traffic interchange (scalextric)<\/strong>, was built in Glorieta de Atocha with a length of more than one kilometre. This changed the physiognomy of the roundabout completely.<\/p>\n

\"Atocha\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Suburban trains<\/strong> linked the city of Madrid to the outskirts. This led to the creation of Estaci\u00f3n de Cercan\u00edas<\/strong>. At the end of the 80\u00b4s the trains of the railway station connected with the new underground stations<\/strong>. The final remodelling<\/strong> was finished in 1992.<\/p>\n

At that time, Estaci\u00f3n Puerta de Atocha<\/strong> not only had the high-speed train but also an immense hall with a magnificent tropical garden inside.<\/p>\n
