Templo de Debod<\/strong> is like going into the past of ancient Egypt<\/strong> and strolling along the remains of a magnificent temple<\/strong> without having to leave Madrid<\/strong>. Probably, more than one tourist who was taking a walk in Plaza de Espa\u00f1a, was awestruck when suddenly an Egyptian temple<\/strong> appeared right in front. This enormous contrast of architectural styles in the centre of a city<\/strong>, is very seldom seen. Templo de Debod<\/strong> is one of the most magical places in Madrid<\/strong>. Today, we dedicate our section Corners of Madrid<\/strong>, to Templo de Debod. We have already seen Parque del Capricho<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"Templo<\/a><\/h2>\n

A BIT OF HISTORY<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In 1968, Egypt gave Spain, as a present, this beautiful temple which is regarded as a jewel<\/strong>. This generosity was due to the Spanish aid that helped to save the Nubia temples. The temple was placed very near Plaza de Espa\u00f1a and next to Paseo del Pintor Rosales<\/strong> and even the original orientation was conserved.<\/p>\n

\"Templo<\/a><\/p>\n

It is estimated that this temple is more than 2.200 years old<\/strong>, and it had been built very near the River Nile in an Egyptian city called Debod<\/strong> ( in memory of Am\u00f3n of Debod and Isis ). It is very likely that a sanctuary existed where the temple was originally built<\/strong>. When the monument was oficially donated to Spain, it was moved by ship to Valencia<\/strong>. From there, 90 lorries and more than 1.300 crates<\/strong> were needed to transport it to Madrid.<\/p>\n

ANCIENT EGYPT IN PLAZA DE ESPA\u00d1A<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It was not an easy task to set it up<\/strong>. The installation had to carried out in two stages<\/strong>: first of all, the original blocks and the two arcades<\/strong> as well as the layout of the gardens surrounding the temple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Templo<\/a><\/p>\n

Afterwards, some parts which were damaged or deteriorated were rebuilt. The terrace<\/strong> was also covered in order to protect it from the rain. All this work lasted for a year and a half<\/strong> and in the summer of 1972, it was completely finished. We think that it is one of the most unique places in Madrid<\/strong>, especially at sunset.<\/p>\n

A REAL JIGSAW PUZZLE<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Did you know that when the temple was brought to Madrid, the different pieces were unnumbered<\/strong>? This meant that setting it up was extremely complicated<\/strong> as there was only a plan, an elevation sketch and some photographs.<\/p>\n
