Who has not seen a tram in a photograph of the old Madrid? Indeed, decades ago, this city would never have been conceived without its tram network. <strong>These trams were always crowded with passengers<\/strong> making it very difficult to find a seat which was a match only for the most courageous.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28341\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/01-tranvia-1.jpg\" alt=\"Trams in Madrid\" width=\"650\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/01-tranvia-1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/01-tranvia-1-300x195.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>last quarter of the XIX century,<\/strong> <strong>the tram<\/strong> system was set up in the capital of Spain. There are some quaint facts about how this means of transport started. Did you know that the first tram carriages were pulled by mules? And that the inauguration of trams in Madrid was held in a well-known restaurant? Today, we pay tribute to the now disappeared trams which will forever remain in our memory. That is, unless we regard the light metro as a tram. This special event was held in Lhardy Restaurant which is still one of the oldest and most emblematic in Madrid. As we have already said, at the beginning <strong>the trams were pulled by mules<\/strong>. The first line in Madrid linked Calle Serrano to Barrio de las Pozas which was located around Calle Princesa and that does not exist at present.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28344\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/03-tranvia-1.jpg\" alt=\"Trams in Madrid\" width=\"650\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/03-tranvia-1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/03-tranvia-1-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong> The first tram lines in Madrid<\/strong> only linked wealthy neighbourhoods. As a result, we must admit that at first, <strong>trams were not within everybody\u00b4s reach<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28345\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/04-tranvia-1.jpg\" alt=\"Trams in Madrid\" width=\"650\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/04-tranvia-1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/04-tranvia-1-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In fact, at that time they were <strong>controlled by private companies<\/strong> instead of by municipal corporations. This meant that Madrile\u00f1os had misgivings about this means of transport. <strong>In 1879, trams worked with steam<\/strong> and linked the neighbourhood of Legan\u00e9s. At last, <strong>in 1899, electric trams were installed<\/strong> which modernized the system considerably.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28346\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/05-tranvia-1.jpg\" alt=\"Trams in Madrid\" width=\"650\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/05-tranvia-1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/05-tranvia-1-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>MADRILE\u00d1OS GOING BY TRAMS, COLLOQUIALLY CALLED ` CANGREJOS\u00b4<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 1920<\/strong>, five of the six companies which controlled the trams in Madrid joined together to create the <strong>Sociedad Madrile\u00f1a de Tranv\u00edas<\/strong>. This marked a turning point in the city, especially when <strong>thirteen years later nearly all the tram service started to be run by the city council<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28347\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/07-tranvia-1.jpg\" alt=\"Trams in Madrid\" width=\"650\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/07-tranvia-1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/07-tranvia-1-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That same year, t<strong>he first bus lines in Madrid started<\/strong>. This is a very important issue because as time went by, these buses would definitely substitute the trams. <strong>In the 30\u00b4s, there was still only one private tram company<\/strong> left which provided transport in Ciudad Lineal. <strong>In 1951, every single tram company became municipal<\/strong> and they were all part of EMT (Empresa Municipal de Transportes).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28348\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/06-tranvia-1.jpg\" alt=\"Trams in Madrid\" width=\"650\" height=\"522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/06-tranvia-1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/06-tranvia-1-300x241.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/06-tranvia-1-623x500.jpg 623w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As <strong>trams were crimson colored, like crabs, the Madrile\u00f1os called them `cangrejos\u00b4<\/strong>. These trams were used till 1972 with 4 lines and around 60 trams in the last section. Nowadays, <strong>we can regard the light metro as a modern tram<\/strong> even though it has a ceremonial role.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/08-tranvia-1.jpg\" alt=\"Trams in Madrid\" width=\"650\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/08-tranvia-1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/08-tranvia-1-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>DID YOU KNOW THAT&#8230;?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Spanish expression <strong>\u201cser mas chulo que un ocho\u201d<\/strong> in English translated <strong>\u201cto be as bold as brass\u201d<\/strong>, stems from tram number 8 which linked Puerta del Sol and Pradera de San Isidro.
