The Muslim City Wall of Madrid<\/strong> is perhaps the oldest construction in Madrid<\/strong> and its origin dates back to the end of the IX century<\/strong>. It is located in the very centre of the city<\/strong>, in Cuesta de la Vega which is next to Catedral de la Almudena. Some time ago, we wrote in this blog about how surprising it is to find a building such as Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales<\/strong><\/a> which is only 5 minutes away from Puerta del Sol. Something similar happens with the remains of the Muslim City Wall of Madrid<\/strong> which can be seen in the old part of the city<\/strong>. This ancient wall confirms the importance of Arab culture in our city<\/strong>. We must recall the Neo-Mudejar style<\/strong><\/a> which can be seen in many buildings in Madrid. \"Muslim<\/p>\n

A CITY WALL WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER PRESERVED<\/strong><\/p>\n

Emir Muhammad I<\/strong> had the Muslim Wall<\/strong> built in order to protect and defend some important buildings of the city<\/strong> such as El Alcazar, that does not exist nowadays. It was also erected to protect the city against civil disturbances<\/strong>. The wall was located next to the river Manzanares<\/strong> and the city of Madrid grew and spread around it.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

It was made up of limestone and flint<\/strong> and at the time it was one kilometre long and nearly 12 metres high<\/strong>. It had an outer moat, three gates and several watchtowers<\/strong>. Unfortunately, later on it was used as a load-bearing wall in order to construct other buildings and therefore, it was not preserved as it should have been<\/strong>. It even became a dumping ground and in some of its sections it was used as a care location for homeless people.<\/p>\n

\"Muslim<\/p>\n

We must highlight the fact that the construction of this wall was decisive for the subsequent urban development of Madrid<\/strong>. Due to this, we give it a urban and historic importance<\/strong>. Nowadays, the remains of the wall which are best preserved are located between Cuesta de la Vega and the crypt of Catedral de la Almudena.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

A REMODELLING AND A PARK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thankfully, in the 80\u00b4s the Council became aware of the importance of this wall and hence started to restore some of its sections.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

The remodelling lasted till the 90\u00b4s and culminated in the creation of the park called Parque del Emir Mohamed I<\/strong>. It is located behind the wall and pays tribute to part of the history of Madrid. This wall was declared Cultural Feature of National Interest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

There is a very interesting part of the wall next to 83, Calle Mayor<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0and the viaduct from were you can see the remains of Torre de Narig\u00fces,<\/strong> which was connected to the wall.<\/p>\n

In the VIII century, the Madrile\u00f1os hid the image of Santa Mar\u00eda la Real de la Almudena<\/strong> so that the Muslims would not find it. The image appeared 300 years later<\/strong>, in 1085, inside a round turret of the wall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
