Today, we can revive what a day in Madrid was like thanks to <strong>Cas Oorthuys<\/strong> a Dutch photographer who came to Madrid in the middle of the 50\u00b4s. Oorthuys wanted to make <strong>a photograpic coverage of the real core and essence of Madrid, without taking into account the political context<\/strong>. Thus, he was very interested in <strong>newspaper and postcard sellers<\/strong> in Puerta del Sol as well as in <strong>the caf\u00e9s of the city<\/strong>, the <strong>busy Gran V\u00eda Street<\/strong>, the <strong>family gatherings in El Rastro<\/strong> and also in Madrile\u00f1os enjoying themselves in <strong>the mythical Pasapoga night club<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28788\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/01-cas-2.jpg\" alt=\"Madrid, a day in 1955\" width=\"650\" height=\"613\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/01-cas-2.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/01-cas-2-300x283.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/01-cas-2-530x500.jpg 530w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Dutch photographer, walked round some areas of the city and <strong>took pictures of Madrile\u00f1os\u00b4s daily pleasant moments<\/strong> in spite of the fact that Spain lived under a dictatorship but this did not prevent them from enjoying themselves. Oorthuys pictures of everyday life are, at present, of great interest because they allow us to sense <strong>what life in Madrid was like in the 50\u00b4s<\/strong>. This will be our journey into the past: we will take a walk around Madrid in the 50\u00b4s. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/calle-mayor-the-past-and-the-present-of-madrid\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">We have already visited Calle Mayor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28789\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/02-cas-1.jpg\" alt=\"Madrid, a day in 1955\" width=\"650\" height=\"644\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/02-cas-1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/02-cas-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/02-cas-1-300x297.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/02-cas-1-505x500.jpg 505w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><strong>1955: A DUTCH PHOTOGRAPHER AND A POET COME TO VISIT MADRID<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">It was May <strong>1955<\/strong> when <strong>the photographer Cas Oorthuys and the poet Bert Schierbeek<\/strong> came to Madrid from Holland in order to try to convey what life in our city was like.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28790\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/03-cas-1.jpg\" alt=\"Madrid, a day in 1955\" width=\"650\" height=\"913\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/03-cas-1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/03-cas-1-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/03-cas-1-356x500.jpg 356w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">They were both acutely aware of the difficult political times that Spain was going through. Nevertheless, <strong>they wanted to focus on Spanish culture and way of life<\/strong> which, for them, was an unkown world. They had both come to Madrid to write a travel book<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(<em>El Coraz\u00f3n de Espa\u00f1a<\/em>) and Madrid had the leading role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28791\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/04-cas-1.jpg\" alt=\"Madrid, a day in 1955\" width=\"650\" height=\"743\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/04-cas-1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/04-cas-1-262x300.jpg 262w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/04-cas-1-437x500.jpg 437w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">They were both amazed by, what for them, was <strong>an unknown culture and way of life<\/strong>. Oorthuys took wonderful pictures of everything that attracted his attention and that captivated him. What can we see in Plaza Mayor any day in 1955? What was a day like in El Rastro? What was the atmosphere like in Madrid at night on a feast day? In these photographs, we have the answer to all these questions.
