The Market of San Ant\u00f3n<\/strong> is similar to Platea Madrid as they both offer the best food products and delicious dishes<\/strong> as well as cultural activities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Market of San Ant\u00f3n<\/strong> is located in the very centre of the Chueca<\/strong> neighbourhood in 24, Augusto Figueroa Street. We have chosen it for our section Corners of Madrid. Previously, we wrote about Parque Lineal del Manzanares<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

A LIVELY AND EVER-CHANGING MARKET<\/strong><\/p>\n

The origin of The Market of San Ant\u00f3n<\/strong> goes back to the XIX century<\/strong>. In those days, the market was organized around wooden crates<\/strong>, and it was named San Ant\u00f3n due to its proximity to the Church of San Ant\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

In 1945<\/strong>, the architect<\/strong> Carlos de la Torre y Costa<\/strong>, planned the market. However, before and during the Spanish Civil War the market opened even though it did not have an appropriate structure.<\/p>\n

Throughout the XX century, the market went through several periods and uses which depended on the demand<\/strong> of the Spanish society. In 2007<\/strong>, it underwent a complete renovation<\/strong> because the building had fallen into disrepair and it was necessary to create a new space<\/strong> in order to promote it.<\/p>\n

Four years later, in 2011, the market re-opened with a different concept<\/strong>: the Madrile\u00f1os could not only do the shopping but also enjoy the food service and restaurant<\/strong>s as well as cultural activities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As we saw in Mercado de San Miguel<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and in Mercado de la Cebada<\/strong><\/a>, the market concept has changed in recent years. At present, markets offer much more than just the sale of food products, as happens in the Market of San Ant\u00f3n<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

THE SPACE<\/strong><\/p>\n

Currently, the Market of San Ant\u00f3n<\/strong> is divided into three different floors<\/strong>. On the first floor, there are ten traditional stalls<\/strong> such as butchers, fish mongers, greengrocers, paultries and so on. In addition, there is also a tapas bar.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

On the second floor<\/strong>, the stalls offer food ready for consumption or take-away food<\/strong>. This space is called show cooking\/take away. Apart from the typical Spanish tapas<\/strong>, you can also have seafood and Greek or Japanese food<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Lastly, on the third floor<\/strong>, on the 400 square metre terrace<\/strong>, there is a splendid restaurant<\/strong> where you can see the stunning view over Madrid<\/strong> whilst enjoying a delicious cocktail<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Market of San Ant\u00f3n is firmly committed to sustainability<\/strong>. A clear proof of this is the great skylight in the central part of the market<\/strong> which stores photovoltaic power<\/strong>. The floor is made of recycled and reused molten basalt<\/strong>. The market has a system of refuse collection which recylcles up to 80% of the organic waste<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
