The L\u00e1zaro Galdiano Museum<\/strong> houses a precious art and bibliographical collection<\/strong> that comprises nearly all branches of art and culture<\/strong>. It is about a legacy that the collector and publisher Jos\u00e9 L\u00e1zaro Galdiano<\/strong> left to Spanish society when he gave over his collection for the use and enjoyment of everybody. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"The<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

So, after his death in 1947<\/strong>, the Fundaci\u00f3n L\u00e1zaro Galdiano<\/strong> was created , and the museum became part of the state\u00b4s art collection. Apart from its splendid art collection, we want to highlight the building itself <\/strong>which was the residence of L\u00e1zaro Galdiano and from which he directed his own Editorial La Espa\u00f1a Moderna<\/em><\/strong>. It is a stately building<\/strong> located in the very heart of Barrio de Salamanca<\/strong>, more specifically in 122, Calle Serrano<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This museum was the former palace of Parque Florido<\/strong> and it has four floors<\/strong> some of which were properly restored so as to house all the works of art which are currently there. Despite the restoration, the layout and the original decoration of many rooms has been conserved<\/strong>, enabling us to enjoy this stunning palace as it was originally when L\u00e1zaro Galdiano lived there. FOUR HALLS FULL OF ART<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Museo L\u00e1zaro Galdiano<\/strong> has a collection of 12.600 art pieces<\/strong> that cover all the arts and techniques. In addition, it also has a magnificent library with more than 20.000 volumes of books<\/strong>. The art pieces are carefully and neatly distributed along its four floors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"The<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

On the ground floor<\/strong>, we can get to know in depth everything about the life of Jos\u00e9 L\u00e1zaro Galdiano as well as enjoy visiting the C\u00e1mara del Tesoro<\/strong> with its impressive jewellery collection with items that date back to the III century BC. On the first floor<\/strong> we can see the noble area of the palace which preserves the original decoration of the time. In total, it has nine halls dedicated to Spanish art <\/strong>from the XV to the XIX century, and it comprises paintings, sculptures as well as period furniture. The second floor<\/strong> is dedicated to European art ( mainly paintings ), with a representation of the most important and notable art schools. The third and last floor<\/strong> is called \u201cGabinete del Coleccionista\u201d<\/strong> where you see all kinds of different objects that are exhibited in showcases and in drawers<\/strong> that the public is allowed to open. In this floor we find weapons, coins, medals, textile specialties, ivories and ceramics<\/strong>: L\u00e1zaro Galdiano\u00b4s collecting zeal is at its peak here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PRICELESS MASTERPIECES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Museo L\u00e1zaro Galdiano<\/strong> houses unique works of art<\/strong>; so much so that we want to mention some of them so that our reader becomes aware of what can be seen during a visit there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance, some engravings and drawings by Goya<\/strong> are exhibited as well as his paintings El Aquelarre<\/em> (Witches\u00b4 Sabbath), or Las Brujas<\/em> (The Witches), both of which belong to his Black Period and are famous throughout the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can also admire the painting Juan Bautista en Meditaci\u00f3n<\/em> by El Bosco<\/strong>. Furthermore, the museum houses San Francisco en \u00c9xtasis<\/em> and Adoraci\u00f3n de los Reyes Magos<\/em> by El Greco<\/strong>, as well as Cabeza de una Muchacha<\/em> by Vel\u00e1zquez<\/strong>. In addition, we can also enjoy looking at Retrato de Fray Pedro O\u00f1a<\/em> by Zurbar\u00e1n<\/strong>. As can be seen, they are top-level artists<\/strong> and the very fact of being able to contemplate their works of art in such a setting as the former Parque Florido Palace<\/strong> is an unforgettable and worthwhile experience<\/strong>.
