The demolition of some of the historic buildings which, as time went by fell into disuse, led to<strong> a complete change of this street<\/strong>. Nowadays, it is regarded as <strong>one of the main streets of old Madrid<\/strong>. Many <strong>historic businesses<\/strong> (some of which still exist), opened up and important people of the social and cultural life of Madrid were often seen there. We invite you to know a bit of the history of this important street. Afterwards, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/time-stops-chamberi-station\/?lang=en\">we will visit Chamber\u00ed Station<\/a>. Today, we will take <strong>A walk into the Past<\/strong> of Carrera de San Jer\u00f3nimo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/01-carrera1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-938\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/01-carrera1.jpg\" alt=\"Carrera de San Jer\u00f3nimo\" width=\"650\" height=\"457\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/01-carrera1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/01-carrera1-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>EL CAMINO DEL SOL (THE WAY TO SOL)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The street started to be built<strong> at the beginning of the XVII century<\/strong>. At first it was known as Camino del Sol. It was called like that because it connected <strong>La Puerta del Sol<\/strong> to the present <strong>Plaza de las Cortes<\/strong> (Spanish Parliament Square). The current name has its origin in the <strong>Iglesia de San Jer\u00f3nimo<\/strong>, even though it is not located nearby. This church stands behind the Prado Museum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/02-carrera1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-941\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/02-carrera1.jpg\" alt=\"Carrera de San Jer\u00f3nimo\" width=\"650\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/02-carrera1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/02-carrera1-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/02-carrera1-637x500.jpg 637w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, the bell tower can be seen from some parts of Carrera de San Jer\u00f3nimo Street. In this street, there were some buildings such as <strong>Torre de la M\u00fasica<\/strong> (a drinks kiosk), <strong>Hospital de los Italianos<\/strong> ( which assisted Italian sick people without financial resources who lived in Madrid ), and <strong>Monasterio de Pinto<\/strong> where nuns lived. Unfortunately, none of them exist today. When these buildings were pulled down, the street was widened. This allowed passers-by to walk at their leisure and thus, it turned into a lively area.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/03-carrera1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-943\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/03-carrera1.jpg\" alt=\"Carrera de San Jer\u00f3nimo\" width=\"650\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/03-carrera1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/03-carrera1-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>COUNTLESS FAMOUS PLACES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Carrera de San Jer\u00f3nimo, many places, which later became famous, started to open to the public. We can highlight <em><strong>Fontana de Oro<\/strong><\/em>, a caf\u00e9 built at the end of the XVIII century where<strong> the literary set and artists<\/strong> spent long hours. The first novel written by <strong>Benito Perez Gald\u00f3<\/strong>s, who lived in Madrid, was named after this caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/04-carrera1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-945\" src=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/04-carrera1.jpg\" alt=\"Carrera de San Jer\u00f3nimo\" width=\"650\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/04-carrera1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.estateone.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/04-carrera1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another place we must mention is the restaurant called <em><strong>Lhardy<\/strong> <\/em>which was inaugurated in 1839 and it is still very successful even though it is one of the oldest in Madrid. Not only does it stand out due to its <strong>marvellous fa\u00e7ade<\/strong> but also to its <strong>stately rooms<\/strong>. The plot of the novel <em><strong>El Maestro de Esgrima<\/strong><\/em>, written by <strong>Arturo P\u00e9rez Reverte<\/strong>, is set in one of these rooms. In 1855, the well-known pastry shop, <em><strong>Casa Mira<\/strong><\/em>, was inaugurated. It was carried out with the film projector of the <strong>Lumi\u00e9re brothers<\/strong> in 1896.
