Making the bed: 5 considerations

Making the bed

Making the bed may seem like an ordinary and everyday routine without any complexity. However, this is not so if we have a high level of demand and we want to enjoy the best atmosphere for rest. There are few more enjoyable things than when we enter a hotel room and see a cosy and well made bed which creates an invitation to accommodate ourselves and to disconnect from the world. Nonetheless, can be conveyed to our own bedroom if we take into account a series of considerations. Which are they? Let us take a look at them in detail.

1. INDULGING OUR MATTRESS

Obviously, the mattress is a fundamental issue as it is the most important part of the bed. In order to be well-rested, it is essential to have a good mattress: nowadays, there are a great variety of mattresses in the market that will enable us to choose the one which is most convenient for us (polyurethane foam, viscoelastic foam, latex, interior sprung mattresses and so on). However, once we have chosen it, we must provide it with all the care it needs. It is very important to protect it with a good mattress cover as this will prevent it from staining and from becoming permeated with smells (washing a mattress cover is a quick and easy task whereas washing a mattress is very cumbersome). We must flip the mattress every six months so as to avoid deterioration in a specific areas and thus making it unbalanced. A good tip is to do it with the change of seasons, so as not to forget. For instance, we can flip it at the beginning of the summer and the winter (twice in a year is enough). In addition, we must air it frequently and prevent putting pressure on it (if we have small children, we must not allow them to play on the bed). Also, we advise you to change it every ten years.

2. INVITING TO ENJOY THE RELAXATION

It is a proven fact that light and neutral colours are the ones that most encourage relaxation and rest and this is why we should always choose our sheets, pillowcases and cushions in these colours. Of course, white will always be our best ally for a bed where we can relax and rest. If we wish to give it a touch of colour, we can have a bedspread or an eiderdown and some cushions in not too strident colours.

3. TIDINESS ABOVE ALL

It may seem trivial, but the simple fact of placing the pillow or a cushion can influence our predisposition towards resting. This is why it is very important that we place each element of the bed with loving care so that we convey this feeling of well-being. If we cannot afford the luxury of ironing the sheets daily, like in the hotels, then we can use the trick of moistening with water the folds and creases, thus leaving no mark whatsoever.

04. CHOOSING GOOD QUALITY SHEETS AND PILLOWCASES

This is a key factor to make our bed really cosy. Sheets and pillowcases that are 100% organic cotton really make a difference because the fabric feel is very pleasant and its smoothness helps us rest and gives us comfort. Likewise, 300 to even 400-thread Egyptian cotton sheets is an excellent option. And of course it is important to have several sets of linens so as to be able to change them regularly and, hence, giving us always a feeling of cleanliness and well-being, which are factors to achieve a good rest.

5. SOME SMALL TIPS

When we place the bottom sheet, we must avoid folding the corners down because normally this can create a fold in the sheet. In order to avoid this, we must put our hand in the corner of the bottom sheet so it gets trapped with the mattress. As for the main sheet, we must place the pattern downwards so that the turnover of the sheet is made visible. If we have a bedspread, we must smooth it out and place it a little bit lower than the mattress so that we can fold the turnover of the sheet over the bedspread. When we tuck the sheet and the bedspread under the mattress, it is better to do it first from the centre inferior part of the bed so as to have the same length of sheet and bedspread on each side. In order to tuck the corner well, we can fold them diagonally and put the material that is left under the mattress. To put the pillow inside the pillowcase, we can fold it in the middle and the fit it into the bottom of the pillowcase, then we fold it with care and smooth it out. If the pillowcase is too long, we can put the extra material underneath the pillow so that it cannot be seen. It is important that the pillowcase has no creases so that we do not have the feeling that something may prevent or disturb sleep and rest. Lastly, if we wish, we can put some cushions that may rest on the pillow but we must make sure that the labels are underneath and cannot be seen.
