How to protect your home against burglars

Burglars at home

Burglars prefer to break into a house in order to steal, when the owners are away on holiday. We can take some precautions to prevent this. However, nobody can guarantee that your house will not be broken into. We must try and avoid making our house stand out and thus, becoming the aim of thieves. We can stop this from happening by doing some very simple and easy things. Let´s see some of them.

TO LOCK THE DOOR

Does it seem obvious that you must lock the door? You may not believe it, but many people leave the door unlocked when they go out. Even if you leave your home for only a few minutes, you must always lock it. A professional thief is able to open an unlocked door in seconds.

DOES YOUR WINDOW FACE A COURTYARD? BE CAREFUL!

Rooms whose windows face a courtyard are more likely to be broken into. Concerning the height of the floor you live in, a thief can get inside by means of the terrace roof and then through the window. Never leave your windows open in summer. A thief will get into your home even though people are there. However, they prefer the small hours when everybody is asleep.

SAFETY LOCKS

Is your lock old-fashioned? The older it is, the easier it will be for a thief to enter your home. It is convenient that you check your lock regularly and that it offers every guarantee.

DO NOT TRUST SOCIAL NETWORKS

Nowadays, there is a tendency to overexpose many aspects of our private lives in the social networks. Beware of this, especially regarding your holidays. Facebook and Twitter become great loudspeakers to undesirable people.

MAKE YOUR HOUSE LOOK AS IF IT IS LIVED IN

A lived in house is dissuasive. Normally, a burglar choses to steal when the owners are away on holiday, this is done because it is easier to rob an empty house than one with the owners inside. If we plan to go away for a long period of time, it is a good idea to arrange a programme that will light the living room from time to time. We can also avoid closing the Venetian blinds completely. Another important thing is to ask a neighbour to collect our mail. We must not give any clues to the possible burglar. Let´s deceive the thief!!!

To quote your article: “A professional thief is able to open an unlocked door in seconds.” Hmm…. I can also open an unlocked door in seconds (and so can almost everyone else). Did you mean something else here? I enjoy reading your articles…. much more entertaining than the quite boring translation I’m doing right now.

    Un abrazo!
